Protecting Your Infants In the Car

It is said that passengers facing backward is the safest position while riding in a car!

Infants must be placed in car seats that work this way. Infants less than 1 year or over 20 lbs. should ride in a seat approved for heavier infants’ rear facing. It is also very important that the car baby seat has sufficient space to avoid little mistakes with serious consequences. The area around the head should be armed with an extremely energy absorbing material that will give protection during a side crash situation.

There are two kinds of car safety seats especially made for babies:

"Infant Only" Safety Seats - are designed for use rear facing only. This kind of baby car seats can be used only as long as the baby’s head is enclosed by the top rim of the seat.

Convertible Safety Seats - are larger and usually fit children from birth to about 40 pounds. Some new models have weight limits as high as 30 to 32 pounds for rear-facing use. These seats are good for babies under age one who are growing more rapidly than average.
