How To Avoid Airbag-Related Injuries

You have probably heard about the many instances when people died in an accident even if the car is equipped with air bags. Why does that occur? Fatal injuries can happen when somebody is seated very close to an automobile airbag module when it is deployed. Such injuries may be sustained by drivers who are slumped over the steering wheel or passengers who slide forward in the car seat during pre-crash braking.

Here are some recommendations given by National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to avoid airbag-related injuries:

1. Make sure the driver's seat has 10" margin of safety between the point where the airbag will deploy.

2. Make sure kids are in the right location in the vehicle and in the proper seat for their age and weight. All children under 12 years old should be seated in the back seat. Child automobile restraints are also be needed.

3. The driver and adult occupants must wear safety belts all the time. Remember that airbags are a supplemental safety device designed to work in conjunction with lap-shoulder belts.

4. Warn the front-seat passengers not place a part of their body on the dashboard.

5. Don't attach things to an air bag module or put loose objects near an air bag module for these can be propelled with great force during impact.
